United State
of Women

A Letter from Our Co-Chairs

The United State of Women was born out of one core motivator: that our movement for gender equity will be stronger if we bring together leaders and organizations to strategize, mobilize, and drive impact together.

What started as a White House Summit, bringing thousands of people together around gender equity, transformed into a convener working closely with partners to galvanize the movement around key issues, including the fights for equal pay, paid family leave, student debt relief, child tax credit, democracy, racial justice, education reform, LGBTQ+ rights, and reproductive justice.

But today, we are writing to share some difficult news. As of September 15th, we are sunsetting operations of the United State of Women. USOW holds a unique position in the gender justice movement, and while we are saddened by this decision to sunset the initiative, we are deeply proud of the impact we’ve made. Over the last seven years:

  • 12,500 people attended a USOW Summit, including 5,000 people in 2016 and 7,500 people in 2018.
  • USOW trained and empowered a cohort of over 130 ambassadors representing 47 U.S. states and territories.
  • USOW brought together more than 400 partner organizations leading the fight for gender justice.
  • When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, USOW successfully mobilized more than 16,500 people through our abortion advocate pledge and reached more than 165,000 people through our Abortion Access Action Hub.

We are so grateful for the growth and innovation we’ve been able to help drive in this movement toward intersectional gender equity, and there’s still so much more work to do.

In order to continue the legacy of USOW, we will ensure that the resources the USOW team has created remain available. And we will ensure that the tens of thousands of everyday feminists who take action with us are connected with our partners in the movement.

When we launched the very first USOW Summit in 2016, we never could have imagined the impact we would have together. All of that was made possible by people like you. We know that because of you, and because of our incredible partners in the gender equity movement, the work of USOW’s mission will continue.

Sincerely,

Valerie Jarrett & Tina Tchen
