Statement from United State of Women Executive Director on SCOTUS Abortion Decision

(WASHINGTON, DC): Jordan Brooks, Executive Director of the United State of Women, released the following statement on the Supreme Court of the United States decision on abortion rights.

“The United State of Women joins the entire reproductive justice community in expressing our anger and dismay at the Supreme Court’s decision to allow state lawmakers to make decisions about our bodies and our healthcare. This decision to overturn Roe v. Wade will harm millions of Americans, allowing states to ban abortion and permitting Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban to go into effect.”

“One thing is clear – abortion is a human right and politicians should never intervene with our decisions about our bodies. We join the community members, activists and individuals across the country both in our grief and our determination. And we know our fight must center the most marginalized because these bans on our bodies are most harmful to low-income communities of color.”

“People across the United States will still need abortion care and the United State of Women is dedicated to protecting abortion providers and patients at all costs. All people should be trusted to make the reproductive healthcare decisions that are best for them on their own terms.”

USOW will continue to share resources and information for people who want to get involved in the fight for abortion access. Abortion is still legal in many states and USOW’s Abortion Access Hub  features an extensive list of actions people can take as abortion advocates including supporting abortion funds across all 50 states, abortion clinic wishlists, social media graphics and resources for people seeking care.

Jordan is available to speak to press about the implications of the Supreme Court decision, including how abortion rights intersect with economic inequality, voting rights, parental support and other gender issues.

Valerie Jarrett, Civic Nation Gender Equity Leaders, Celebrate Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Confirmation to the Supreme Court

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, following her confirmation vote in the Senate, Valerie Jarrett, Board Chair of Civic Nation and leaders of Civic Nation initiatives United State of Women (USOW) and End Rape On Campus celebrated the historic confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court.

“The confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is a historic step forward and positive reflection of the rich and talented diversity of our country,” said Valerie Jarrett, Civic Nation Board Chair and former Senior Advisor to President Obama. “She is a brilliant and accomplished jurist whose exceptional qualifications, life experiences, and judicial temperament will be a real asset for our democracy. And as the Supreme Court is slated to consider cases in the coming months that will significantly impact civil rights and social justice gains – from voting rights and gender equity to climate change – Judge Jackson will no doubt be an outstanding justice for all.”

“The confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is a crucial step towards the advancement of our democracy, especially for survivors of sexual assault,” said Executive Director of End Rape On Campus, Kenyora Parham. “Judge Jackson has an exceptional record, including ruling fairly and impartially for civil, disability, immigration and reproductive rights, as well as the rights of survivors of domestic violence. Judge Jackson’s confirmation is meaningful not just for Black women, who will finally see ourselves represented on the Supreme Court, but also for survivors, who will have a justice who values their civil rights and personhood.”

“Today is a historic moment and deeply personal for me,” said USOW Associate Director of Programs Morgan Johnson. “The confirmation of Judge Jackson is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, we can still triumph. Despite the many challenges she had to overcome during the confirmation process, her qualifications and experience spoke for themselves. Her confirmation not only brings the Supreme Court closer to representing the diversity of America, but it gives hope to all the Black women and girls, like me, who have been told we are not good enough. We will continue to have her back and those of all the incredible Black women to come after.”

The United State of Women and End Rape On Campus were proud to join with partners at She Will Rise, Black Women’s Roundtable and the National Women’s Law Center, who worked tirelessly to rally broad public support and amplify Judge Jackson’s glowing qualifications. On March 22nd, Parham spoke at a rally in front of the Supreme Court lifting the voices of Black-women led organizations in support of Judge Jackson’s nomination. USOW provided resources for their community to learn about Judge Jackson, push back against attacks on her qualifications and contact their senators in support of her confirmation.

Leading National Gender Equity Organizations React To President Biden Signing the Reauthorized Violence Against Women Act

WASHINGTON, DC: Today, the leaders of the United State of Women, End Rape On Campus and It’s On Us, three initiatives of Civic Nation leading the fight for gender equity, will go to the White House as President Biden signs the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. They released the following statements:

Jordan Brooks, Executive Director, United State of Women

“The women’s community celebrates President Biden signing the Violence Against Women Act into law, marking the first time in nearly a decade that this critical piece of legislation has been updated to meet the needs of survivors of gender-based violence. This moment could not come at a more important time as we’ve seen an increase in this type of violence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, survivors were reminded that they are not alone and that our leaders stand with us in the mission to ending violence against women and girls everywhere.”

Kenyora Parham, End Rape On Campus

“End Rape On Campus (EROC) is pleased to see that VAWA has grown to fit a more expansive understanding of what justice and support for historically excluded survivors can look like. EROC prioritizes the needs of student survivors who have been historically marginalized, including students from tribal communities, survivors with disabilities and LGBTQIA+ identified survivors. This iteration of VAWA responds to the emerging needs of these communities by expanding opportunities for population-specific, trauma-informed training for service providers on domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault or stalking. As we center the needs of historically marginalized survivors, we also need to see more trauma-informed training within all levels of law enforcement to ensure the response to student survivors’ needs are met through a non-carceral approach.”

Tracey Vitchers, It’s On Us

“At It’s On Us we are experiencing a skyrocketing demand for our dating and sexual violence prevention education programs, driven by increased rates of intimate partner violence throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and a spike in reported sexual assaults since campus reopenings this past fall semester. We are pleased to see the reauthorized Violence Against Women Act include increased funding for prevention education efforts, including more than doubling the funding available through the CDC for the Rape Prevention and Education program — from $50 million to $110 million — and increased funding for VAWA Consolidated Youth grants, which fund prevention education programs that engage men and boys as allies and promote healthy relationships. As we continue to meet this increasing demand for prevention, we need additional funds to evaluate prevention education efforts in K-12 and campus environments as rigorous, ongoing evaluation is a necessary component of the work to end sexual violence.”

Through education, community, and action, USOW amplifies issues at the intersection of gender and racial justice and galvanizes organizations, public figures, and everyday feminists of all genders to drive policy and culture change.

ABOUT End Rape On Campus:

End Rape On Campus (EROC) works to end campus sexual violence through direct support for survivors and their communities; prevention through education; and policy reform at the campus, local, state, and federal levels. EROC envisions a world where each individual has an educational experience free from violence, and until then, that all survivors are believed, trusted, and supported.

EROC was in 2013 by several students after they connected and shared their harrowing experiences of sexual assault and recognized that there was a gap in students understanding their rights under Title IX and the lack of accountability held by colleges and universities. By strategically coming together to show that campus sexual assault is a nationwide epidemic, EROC began its national advocacy work by assisting students with filing federal complaints against universities and exposing the barriers that prevented students from navigating through a fair and equitable process. With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the heightened awareness of the racial reckoning, EROC, under its Centering the Margins (CTM) framework, shifted its priorities to fill the disparity of resources between different communities with the intention to center and uplift historically excluded and marginalized students when addressing campus sexual assault. End Rape On Campus is housed at Civic Nation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that uses organizing, engagement, and public awareness to address some of our nation’s most pressing challenges.
ABOUT It’s On Us:

It’s On Us was founded in September 2014 as an initiative of the Obama-Biden White House. The program launched following recommendations from the White House Task Force to Prevent Sexual Assault that noted the importance of calling everyone into the conversation on sexual assault prevention. Over the last six years, It’s On Us has grown into the nation’s largest nonprofit program dedicated to college sexual assault prevention and survivor support activating students on hundreds of campuses in our awareness and education programs. It’s On Us is housed at Civic Nation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that uses organizing, engagement and public awareness to address some of our nation’s most pressing challenges.

Statement from the United State of Women Executive Director on President Biden’s Supreme Court Nomination

WASHINGTON, DC – Jordan Brooks, Executive Director of the United State of Women, released the following statement after President Biden’s announcement of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as the Supreme Court nominee:

“Judge Jackson’s nomination to serve as America’s next Supreme Court Justice, and the first Black woman on our nation’s highest court, is an incredible moment in history that the entire gender justice community is celebrating. She is a deeply qualified judge with a proven record of putting equal justice above all else.

We are confident Judge Jackson will be a fair-minded justice and protect our most sacred rights as Americans, including reproductive justice, voting rights, health care access and LGBTQ equity.

We cannot ignore that of the 115 people who have served on the Supreme Court, only three of them have been people of color – and only five have been women. Today’s announcement brings us one step closer to the Supreme Court representing the diversity of America. Judge Jackson will be an exceptional addition to the bench. #WeHaveHerBack and look forward to a swift confirmation process to ensure that this qualified nominee becomes our next Supreme Court Justice. ”

United State of Women Applauds President Biden’s Commitment To Nominate A Black Woman As Successor To Justice Breyer

WASHINGTON, DC – Jordan Brooks, Executive Director of the United State of Women, released a statement following the announcement of Justice Breyer’s retirement from the Supreme Court:

“The United State of Women is incredibly grateful for Supreme Court Justice Breyer’s commitment to protecting civil rights, women’s rights and reproductive justice throughout his tenure on the Supreme Court. In light of his retirement, we applaud President Biden’s commitment to delivering on his promise to nominate a Black woman as his successor and call on the Senate to swiftly confirm the nominee. Our nation’s highest court has made landmark decisions that impact everything from school segregation to women’s health to marriage equality, and despite the many Black women who have fought for our rights and argued in front of the Supreme Court, they have never been represented among the nine justices — and that reality must change immediately,” said Brooks.

“Our movement is facing the gravest threat to abortion access and rights in decades with Roe v. Wade on the line in the Supreme Court. The court’s rulings could have serious implications for Americans across the country, especially Black, Indigenous and people of color seeking abortion care. President Biden must select a nominee who is deeply committed to protecting not just abortion, but also reproductive justice, racial justice and voting rights. At the United State of Women, we look forward to seeing the first Black woman in history on the bench defending our values as Americans.”

MORE THAN 40 WOMEN’S COMMUNITY LEADERS RELEASE JOINT STATEMENT AHEAD OF JANUARY 6TH ANNIVERSARY

WASHINGTON, DC – Ahead of the first anniversary of the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, more than 40 organizations and leaders of the gender equity community released a joint statement pledging to fight for our democracy.

“One year ago – January 6, 2021 – a violent mob of anti-democratic insurrectionists attacked the U.S. Capitol in a failed attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. The sexism, racism and othering exhibited that day have roots in the misogyny and white supremacy that have long fueled violence and discrimination in this country. When those hateful beliefs and violence go unchallenged and are instead amplified by those in power, our very democracy is at risk. That is why there must be full accountability for all those involved in the insurrection and its continued disinformation. To do anything less is to further risk the erosion of our country and our values of equity, justice and fairness.

Our community of multi-racial, multi-generational gender justice leaders represents women, girls and gender nonconforming people from every corner of this nation. We remain as strongly united in our commitment to protect democracy as we were one year ago. We will not back down. We are organizing day in and day out in 2022 to ensure that our voices are heard and our democracy is protected. And we need leaders who represent us– running for office and building the democracy we deserve.

Today, our democracy, our bodies and our dignity are still at stake. Lawmakers in 49 states have proposed more than 500 bills making it harder for people to vote. Our time to act is now. We urge all Americans to contact their Senators and demand that they support the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act.

Anti-freedom politicians are trying to sabotage our elections and take control over the most personal freedom we have — determining what happens to our own bodies, lives and futures. When the right to vote is under attack, abortion and all gender and racial justice issues are under attack. We are urging lawmakers to protect voting rights using every means at their disposal, so that we may achieve economic, social, and physical freedom for all women, girls, and people of marginalized genders.”

The coalition was led by the United State of Women and includes:

Gender Equity Initiatives On Military Justice Reforms Included in House-Passed National Defense Authorization Act

NDAA includes meaningful changes for sexual assault survivors, incorporates removing the investigation and prosecution of sexual assault from the chain of command

CONTACT: Press@civicnation.org

Washington, DC – Today, Civic Nation’s gender equity initiatives, The United State of Women, It’s On Us and End Rape on Campus, stood together as organizations at the forefront of the fight for gender equity to release a statement following the House passage of The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The NDAA includes historic and meaningful reform of the military justice system’s handling of sexual assault cases.

“Every issue is a gender issue at USOW, especially survivor justice,” said the United State of Women Executive Director Jordan Brooks. “We are pleased to see Congress pass bipartisan reform on military sexual assault that is both trauma-informed and prioritizes the needs of survivors of sexual misconduct. Reforms like this will help set an important precedent for how survivors must be centered and believed across all sectors as we work to create a world free from gender-based violence.”

“It’s On Us is pleased that Congress has reached a bipartisan deal to achieve historic reform of the military justice system’s handling of sexual assault cases, including recommendations made by the Independent Review Commission on Sexual Assault led by Lynn Rosenthal and supported by President Biden and Secretary Austin. Removing the investigation and prosecution of sexual assault from the chain of command and creating dedicated units to handle these cases will hopefully lead to more survivors accessing support and justice. We also believe that increased reporting will help to inform the creation of much-needed prevention education efforts and work to eliminate sexual violence from within our military ranks,” said It’s On Us Executive Director Tracey Vitchers.

“End Rape On Campus is proud to support the NDAA’s military justice reform as a critical and transformative step in addressing the long-standing sexual assault crisis present in the military. Each year, thousands of service members experience sexual assault, and then must face the fear of retaliation and lack of accountability,” said End Rape On Campus Executive Director, Kenyora Parham. “Through addressing the bias yielded by the military chain of command and ensuring that investigation and prosecution procedures are conducted by an independent unit of trained, professional military prosecutors, EROC believes this bill will serve as the first step in shifting culture within the military and creating a violence-free environment in which all service member survivors are seen, heard and believed.”

United State of Women Celebrates Historic Investments in Women and Families in Build Back Better Framework, Supports Continued Fight For Paid Family Leave

Framework includes transformational investments in child care, caregiving, expanded Child Tax Credit, and universal preschool. USOW continues to advocate for inclusion of paid leave.

Contact: Press@civicnation.org

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, President Biden announced the Build Back Better framework which includes historic investments in child care and home care, the extension of the Child Tax Credit, universal preschool and a critical expansion of affordable health care coverage. This investment in care infrastructure will be transformative for women and families.

Parents will now have access to high-quality, affordable child care and expanded resources to care for their loved ones with disabilities. Additionally, the extension of the Child Tax Credit to 90% of parents for 2022 will help cover the cost of food, housing, medicine, and transportation and will continue to reduce child poverty. The framework also includes permanent refundability for the Child Tax Credit, meaning that the neediest families will continue to receive the full Child Tax Credit in years to come. This year USOW has worked alongside community partners to ensure that the lowest-income families are able to access this life-changing benefit.

“Thank you to President Biden and the champions in Congress who advocated for and continue to push for the historic investments in women and families, which will lead to years of transformational, equitable change,” said Executive Director of the United State of Women Jordan Brooks. “The care infrastructure policies included in the Build Back Better framework will be a game-changer and we are nowhere near finished fighting. We will continue to work alongside members of Congress to ensure that paid family leave is included in the final legislation alongside these critical investments in caregiving, the Child Tax Credit, universal preschool and home care.”
